Banchangkko (Love 911) (2012) Romantic comedy veers from tonal extremes of broad slapstick to wrenching drama via fire fighting action, as distrustful doctor Han Hyo-joo and mourning rescuer Go Soo initially spar and inevitably fall in love. Emotional investment maintained by appealing stars.

7 Kwang Gu (Sector 7) (2011) Strikingly designed visuals unfortunately highlight artifice rather than creating immersive atmosphere as crew on remote oil rig face attack from gooey creature out of the depths. Non-stop action after 30 minutes of setup, though performances and style are forced.

Bachelorette (2012) Schoolfriend's marriage sees New York reunion of Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher. Fueled with raucous humor and raw perception, breezy pace builds laughs, physical and verbal, and leads convincingly deliver persuasive drama. Unfussy production effectively concentrates on the personal.

Physical Evidence (1989) Solid creative talent and seasoned cast somehow conjure up bland, inert courtroom thriller, lacking in tension and surprise. Edgy lawyer Theresa Russell represents burnt-out Burt Reynolds as evidence in murder mounts; flat visuals mirror dull exposition.

Gisooljadeul (The Con Artists) (2014) Self-assured charmer and safe-cracker Kim Woo-Bin is forced to work for menacing gangster Kim Young-Chul in heist of millions from Incheon customs. Polished visuals keep action brisk, though ensemble comedy is strained and uneven rhythms dilute multiple twists of predictable story.

Le Passé (The Past) (2013) Intelligently, sensitively told and performed drama of broken feelings and family guilt sees Ali Mosaffa return to finalise divorce with Bérénice Bejo who faces home conflict with daughter Pauline Burlet and new relationship Tahar Rahim. Touching naturalism veers to calculated melodrama.

Married Life (2007) Rich design and lush score are smartly conceived for corrosive desires of Chris Cooper's affair with Rachel McAdams which inspire plan to murder wife Patricia Clarkson. Sporadic humor lacks bite and tension flounders, while cynical Pierce Brosnan is unable to provide needed energy.
