Lost Horizon (1937) Grand romantic adventure excels with visual opulence, sweeping British diplomat Ronald Colman and last evacuees from war-torn China to remote, hidden valley where community is utopian. Unhurried pace and beguiling Dimitri Tiomkin score gradually weaves own spell.

Carol (2015) Structured with sense of poignant desire and framed by visuals that intimately observe the participants, prejudice of gorgeously conjured 1950s New York is background for stifled Cate Blanchette and curious Rooney Mara's relationship. Builds to sublimely romantic resolution.

Dumb Money (2023) Clean, true-life narrative line sees basement YouTuber Paul Dano gather devout small-time investors to buy GameStop shares, ballooning price despite efforts of voracious Seth Rogan's short-selling hedge fund. Remains appealingly crafted, even as comic energy should build.

Liú Làng Dì Qiú (The Wandering Earth) (2019) Both convoluted and schematic, epically conceived visuals and breathlessly paced action spin narrative of attempts to avert collision with Jupiter. Brief sparks of humor outweighed by frequent pauses to strain for sentimental depth. Undeniably entertaining.

The Electric State (2025) Bleak, alternate 1990s establishes aftermath of conflict between humans and robots, with rebellious Millie Bobby Brown and cynical Chris Pratt teaming to find her lost brother and change world. Narrative mess offers little adventure, strained emotion and somber visuals when they should pop.

Flashback (2021) Spirited pace sends Caroline Vigneaux's cynical lawyer spinning through time, from prehistoric era to 1970s, to understand battle for women's rights. Enthusiastic lead remains appealing comic force, verbal as well as physical, even if scattershot tale remains only fitfully amusing.

Middle Of The Night (1959) Newly separated, insecure Kim Novak begins uneasy relationship with her clothes manufacturer boss Frederick March, twice her age, as family and social doubts on both sides provoke fractures. Sometimes stilted, often unpredictable drama inhabited by strong cast.

Back In Action (2025) Breezy action comedy benefits from engaging leads as former agents Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx are forced from suburban parenthood to retrieve valuable electronic controller and protect kids. Glossy production, variable visual effects, total lack of suspense.

The Four Musketeers (1974) Though maintains visuals teeming with colour and activity, and adds more expansive action amid strong strong visual gags, continuing tale feels a less fresh extension. Vengeful Faye Dunaway adds darker shades in tune with adventure's more sober resolution.

2012 (2009) As governments and wealthy build protective Himalayan arks, global apocalypse throws earthquakes, erupting volcanoes and tsunamis to test struggling writer John Cusack in saving estranged wife Amanda Peet and kids. Overblown visual effects pummel story and characters with giddy relish and little sense.
