Cocoon (1985) Fueled by James Horner's elevating score, Wilford Brimley, Don Ameche and Hume Cronyn discover rejuvenating powers of pool where generous Brian Dennehy maintains rescued alien pods. Energetically played, fluid sci-fi fantasy provides equally affecting view on age and loss.

Blockers (2018) Enjoyably raucous and persuasively endearing, energetic pace prevents messy narrative spinning out as diverse parents John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz band together to disrupt plan of respective daughters Geraldine Viswanathan, Kathryn Newton and Gideon Adlon to lose virginity on prom night. Solid laughs with committed cast.

Holland (2025) Studied visuals and setting forges off-beat atmosphere as seemingly contented Nicole Kidman senses cracks in married life with suspicious Matthew Macfadyen and enlists fellow teacher Gael García Bernal to uncover truth. Unsettling humor turns to dark thrills without convincing.

Nice Girls (2024) Dim-witted comedy flavored with action, as unruly Riviera cop Alice Taglion is forced to team with methodical Stéfi Celma and ungainly hacker Baptiste Lecaplain in order to solve murder. Told with amiable spirit, forgettable, meandering plot features smattering of laughs.

Moonstruck (1987) Brimming with charm and character, central story strand sees love wearied Cher accept marriage offer from sober Danny Aiello, before falling for his emotional brother Nicolas Cage. Skillfully crafted, ensemble cast reveals host of romantic secrets as genuine heart and humor blossoms.

Broadcasting Christmas (2016) Low stakes, by the numbers comedy has ex-lovers Melissa Joan Hart, local TV reporter, and Dean Cain, city newsreader, compete for national morning show position. Fleeting self-aware humor and wholesome themes consumed by predictability and awkward staging.

I Wake Up Screaming (1941) Tasty noir sees promoter Victor Mature suspected of aspiring actress Carole Landis' murder, with only her sister Betty Grable convinced of his innocence. Brooding atmosphere summed up by imposing presence of detective Laird Cregar, leading to enjoyable plot twists.

Hello, Love, Again (2024) Told with appealing openness, love story reverberates through the years as resolute Kathryn Bernardo and sincere Alden Richards face tense reunion in Calgary. Romantic intensity and stresses of Filipino immigrants, as well as 2020 covid isolation, underpin raw emotions.

A Simple Favor (2018) Enjoyably mean and twisting with a sleazy suburban touch as eager vlogger Anna Kendrick looks to solve disappearance of elusive friend Blake Lively. Polished production sees noirish secrets and impulses revealed with dark humor, accented by playful Theodore Shapiro score.

Gemma Bovery (2016) Bored, earthy Gemma Arterton maintains appealing edge as reflection of Flaubert's heroine, imagined by frustrated local baker Fabrice Luchini to relive fatal outcome. Controlled, attractive visuals and knowing humour unable to compensate for lack of real character.
