Wicked Little Letters (2023) Broadly played comedy leans into Jessie Buckley's soulful exuberance and Olivia Colman's devilish propriety, delighting in contrasting 1920s English seaside setting with profane, insulting content of anonymously sent letters. Laced with societal misogyny, narrative remains involving yet dramatically muted.

Invitación a un asesinato (A Deadly Invitation) (2023) Along with group of suspicious guests, curious true crime podcaster Regina Blandón receives enigmatic invitation to coastal mansion of high end sister Maribel Verdú, who predicts her own death. Moderate laughs and mystery, unevenly told.

Spadek (Inheritance) (2024) Gathered for will of mischievous inventor and gameshow host, estranged family members must solve puzzles to find invaluable patents while also finding they're all potential murder suspects. Evocative design provides polish to sporadic laughs and underwhelming mystery.

Pitfall (1948) Suburban conformity with wife Jane Wyatt shatters for insurance executive Dick Powell as he becomes intoxicated by hopeful, abused Lizabeth Scott, with obsessed private investigator Raymond Burr determined to control her and ex in prison. Tight, noir impulses naturally lead to murderous twists, leaving compromised futures.

Pursued (1947) Seductively visualized western trades in dark psychology, enveloped by noirish interiors and ominous landscapes, with war hero Robert Mitchum uncovering childhood trauma and murderous family secrets, complicated by romance with foster sister Teresa Wright. Bold flashbacks and cathartic violence.

L'Économie du couple (After Love) (2016) Intense, uncomfortable view of relationship breakdown as Bérénice Bejo and Cédric Kahn's fractured marriage suffers through emotional and financial pain, need and desire long replaced by irritation and contempt, despite fleeting joy with two daughters. Sharply observed, clean style enhances impact.

Broken Lance (1954) Out of jail, conflicted Robert Wagner recalls late, overbearing father Spencer Tracy who controlled ranching empire with iron discipline, until legal taming of the West enabled older son Richard Widmark's betrayal. Informed by expansive visuals, story remains dramatically and thematically gripping, with solid support from Katy Jurado and Jean Peters.

Anne Of The Indies (1951) Earthy, uncompromising pirate captain Jean Peters, attractive visuals, and lush Franz Waxman score provide enjoyable diversions for story of betrayal and revenge as Louis Jourdan secretly spies for British. Energetic swordfights and naval battles though plotting and character development remains less adventurous.

Gieokui Bam (Forgotten) (2017) Sleekly designed, deceptively progressed mystery has sensitive Kang Ha-Neul witness abduction of admired older brother Kim Moo-Yul and become convinced the man who returns is a different person. Multiple twists pleasingly subvert character, even if tension dissipates.

Sachertorte (2022) Charmingly realised and lightly played, chance Berlin afternoon with teasing Michaela Saba sends uncommitted Max Hubacher to Vienna on off-chance they'll meet again. Helped by generous café owner Maeve Metelkan, comfortable culture and love lessons enjoyably learnt.
