The Candidate (1972) Sharply structured, a cynical view of political manipulation leavened with humor. The documentary style and tone grounds the narrative, a cautionary tale that still resonates. Robert Redford and Peter Boyle are excellent, director Michael Ritchie maintains a true touch.

Underwater (2020) B-movie monster antics dressed up with gleaming modern cinematic production values which maintains interest but also highlights the emptiness. Action is unrelenting as Kristen Stewart attempts to escape a base miles beneath the surface. Enjoyable while it lasts.

Godzilla King Of The Monsters (2019) Stuffed with burnished imagery, pummeled with crushing audio, a punishing series of monster fights and destruction in the name of nature preservation. A thin narrative links scientists making stupid decisions. Bear McCreary's score is terrific.

Grandma (2015) Powered by Lily Tomlin's caustic, ill-tempered, emotionally wounded lead turn, an incisive look at family and romantic dynamics built around an open discussion of abortion. The episodic structure carefully builds humor and sense of loss, small in scale, big in heart.

Dark Skies (2013) Initially intriguing, domestic issues dovetail with increasingly strange phenomena in a suburban family house, a slow-burn tension that's enhanced by a genuine Keri Russell. More predictable as it progresses, scares are dissipated while ending and coda feel flat.

A Portrait Of Jennie (1948) Imbued with lush, swooning visuals, a dream-like atmosphere sweeps up the luminous Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotten in an overtly sentimental, metaphysical romance that folds through time. Undeniably effective, personal taste defines it as either profound or cloying.

The Lake House (2006) A typically engaging Sandra Bullock and impassive Keanu Reeves communicate through a post box even though separated by three years. Mind and time bending illogicality diffuses emotion and character involvement, yet somehow pull off a suitably romantic finale.
