Wildlife (2018) An intelligent, generous drama sees a teenage son witness the breakdown of the marriage between truthful Carey Mulligan and conflicted Jake Gyllenhaal. The 60s setting is effective, and visuals and design are in tune with emotions, reflections for a fine cast.

Take This Waltz (2011) Though it exists in a romanticized city environment, the lustful entanglements of conflicted Michelle Williams, sly Luke Kirby and languid Seth Rogen pierce real emotions. Tenderly directed, with a visually intoxicating sheen, a winning blend of artifice and truth.

Laura Gets A Cat (2017) Dana Brooke is persuasive and empathetic as a hopeful writer struggling with creativity and a direction in life, while director Michael Ferrell creates a loose, generous structure and some acute dialogue. A slight story, elevated by small, personal moments.

Sleeping With Other People (2015) The quirky, damaged supporting characters in typical romcoms become the central duo in a snappy, raunchy comedy, as Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis attempt to preserve a relationship by avoiding sex. Even when jokes fall flat, modern observations ring true.

A Fistful Of Dynamite (1971) A typically grandiose Sergio Leone Western, contrasting the minutiae of a face with a vast landscape, a collision of sweaty comedy and blistering violence, of political reflection and personal loss. Morricone's beguiling score ties tonal and time shifts.
Daphne (2017) On screen throughout, Emily Beecham inhabits a character who's intriguing, frustrating and cynical, drifting through South London until witnessing a knife attack causes a break in her outlook. Clinical, detached observations burrow into modern life and relationships.

Green Book (2018) Solid, sentimental drama of friendship and shifting prejudices, as Mahershala Ali's African American pianist hires street smart Italian American Viggo Mortensen to drive him through the Deep South in 1962. Leisurely paced, racism is confronted with heart and a persuasive cast.
