Rambo III (1988) Suitably epic adventure for Sylvester Stallone's invulnerable warrior, out of Thai seclusion to rescue former commander Richard Crenna and take on Soviet army in Afghanistan. Solidly orchestrated action provides isolated thrills, while expansive Jerry Goldsmith score does best to cohere drama.
Anaconda (1997) Rough-hewn creature action as enthusiastic documentary film-maker Jennifer Lopez searches for lost Amazonian tribe, but is diverted by loopy Jon Voight to hunt mythic snake. Gets by on energetic absurdity rather than building tension, evocative locations compensating for ropey effects.
Revenir (Back Home) (2019) Alternately reflective and intense, social and personal pressures infuse each musty frame as Niels Schneider visits family farm after decade away and forms tentative relationship with brother's widow Adèle Exarchopoulos. Compelling physicality feeds persuasive character dynamics.
What Happens Later (2023) When snappy dialogue and situation prevails, as ex-lovers Meg Ryan and David Duchovny recall youth and reveal lost chances after chance encounter at snowstorm restricted airport, humor and emotion maintains easy familiarity. Whimsical elements feel less comfortable.
Lonely Planet (2024) Emotionally and creatively bruised, Laura Dern accepts invitation to Moroccan writers' retreat to work on novel, and connects with equally disillusioned financier Liam Hemsworth. Comfortably engaging, with character shades and evolving narrative unsurprising, yet lacks in a genuine rush.
The Pink Panther (1963) Agreeably smooth comedy centers on urbane thief David Niven's efforts to steal titular diamond from guarded princess Claudia Cardinale. Elevated beyond passing entertainment by tuneful Henry Mancini score and inspired scene-stealing from Peter Sellers' first Inspector Clouseau appearance.
Neighbors (1981) Dull suburbanite John Belushi finds staid life thrown into confounding, provoking chaos when corrupting Dan Aykroyd and seductive Cathy Moriarty move in. Set in some off-balance reality, little makes sense; either misguided, confused mess or feverish, innovative dark comedy, depending on mood.
The Money Pit (1986) Elaborately imagined and designed slapstick set pieces highlight mounting frustration for violinist Shelley Long and attorney Tom Hanks as their two week dream house renovation turns into financial and emotional torture. Sparse narrative, yet spirited performers and fluid visuals maintain steady laughs.
The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946) Emotionally intense and socially vivid, Dana Andrews, Frederic March and Harold Russell, hurt mentally and physically, return from war to search for identity in changed America. Structure and visuals charged with lasting, intimate relevance, matched by sublime Hugo Friedhofer score.
