The Shadow Strays (2024) Intoxicatingly indulgent mix of blistering action and principled retribution melodrama as Aurora Ribero's anonymously efficient assassin battles through Jakarta's vicious gangs and corrupt police to rescue murdered neighbor's child and reclaim identity. Intense, bludgeoning violence heightened by propulsively choreographed visuals.

Three Came Home (1950) Sober, solidly crafted true life adaptation of survival as enduring Claudette Colbert suffers degradation in Japanese prisoner camps after Burma invasion in 1941, moments of community undercut by cruelty. Shaded approach to commander Sessue Hayakawa adds to conclusion's emotion.

The Royal Hotel (2023) Fast establishing uneasy atmosphere, contrasting American backpackers Julia Garner and Jessica Henwick find bar work in remote Australian town with coarse, increasingly threatening male clientele. Observant detail though undefined characters diffuse effect.

Anong (My Boo) (2024) Enjoyable mix of light comedy silliness and gradually sincere love story as broke Sutthirak Subvijitra works with derelict mansion's trapped spirits to create successful haunted house business while romance develops with lost ghost Maylada Susri. Appealing cast and confident staging.

The Nightingale (2018) Brutal storytelling accentuated by stripped down visuals as righteous Aisling Franciosi and instinctive Aboriginal tracker Baykali Ganambarr pursue revenge on barbaric British officer Sam Claflin across hostile Tasmanian landscape. Unflinching approach to rape and violence exposes rage against personal and colonial cruelty though pacing and staging remain less focused.

Jeune & Jolie (Young & Beautiful) (2013) Dramatically charged coming of age for curious, rebellious teen Marine Vacth sees summer fling turn to Parisienne prostitution alongside emotional reluctance. Amid themes of family dysfunction and lost identity, provocative approach remains unresolved and character subdued.

Roommates (2026) Fitfully amusing student conflict sees anxiously introverted Sadie Sandler and brashly confident Chloe East's initial friendship unravel when they share college residence. Effectively defined characters deliver on set piece strain yet odd framing and uneven pace fail to build comic momentum.
