The Long Goodbye (1973) Wearied, principled Elliott Gould shabbily inhabits dogged detective Philip Marlowe whose search to prove dead friend's innocence dovetails noir fatalism and 70s cynicism with absurdist humor and edgy menace. Fluid visuals and fine cast pave way to earn uncompromising end.

The Tall Man (2012) Dread atmosphere conjured of damaged mining town where young children are going missing suggests societal and supernatural evil, before rapidly going off the rails. Committed Jessica Biel and polished technique maintains interest, even as twisting narrative flounders.

Marrowbone (2017) Stylish visuals and evocative 60s design provide potent background for personal ghosts as agitated George McKay tries to keep siblings safe from family horrors. Local librarian Anya Taylor-Joy gradually reveals truth. Character involvement and scares remain subdued.

Big Trouble In Little China (1986) Disarming Kurt Russell is drawn into mystical evil seeking green-eyed Kim Cattrall for wife in genre blast that whips through comedy and action with gleeful disregard. Casual narrative barely hangs together even as individual moments shine.

Too Many Husbands (1940) Mischievous Jean Arthur faces a decision on which husband to keep when presumed dead Fred MacMurray returns from desert island after she's remarried his best friend Melvyn Douglas. Amiable talent make for easy watch even as staging remains sluggish.

Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) Persuasive, sympathetic Henry Fonda finds his way as a lawyer, revealing family concerns and seeking fairness in society. Design and story remain theatrical, with intense dialogue and emotion relieved by sharp sense of humor and some elegant visuals. Polished entertainment.

Begin Again (2013) Meandering tale of music and artistry straddles attuned romanticized urban realism with melodramatic family relationships as songwriter Keira Knightley and producer Mark Ruffalo create New York album. Charming manipulation provides appealing characters and music.
