The Witches Of Eastwick (1987) Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon and Cher create a striking coven who realize confidence, independence and latent powers after disruptive Jack Nicholson rips up their sleepy town. Wicked humor infuses visual rush and playful score before finally hurtling off the rails.

The Terminator (1984) Relentless action edited with propulsive intensity, Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg from the future hunts Linda Hamilton in series of violent, exciting set pieces. As ruthlessly effective as titular assassin, time bending thriller retains blunt, dark freshness.

West Side Story (2021) Gorgeously realized and staged, both technically and emotionally, Bernstein / Sondheim score and songs shine within exciting dreams and tragic confines of young lovers. Urban sweep melds with exuberant dance, at once liberating, mournful and transcendent.

Little Women (2019) Intuitive adaptation reframes Saoirse Ronan's conviction to be a 19th century author with contemporary concerns and creativity, a fresh view without losing emotional heart of sisters and family. Design and color schemes create evocative settings, playfulness and melancholy well balanced.

Arukimedesu no taisen (The Great War of Archimedes) (2019) Despite synthetic CGI action prologue, often gripping debate on nationalistic pride and military symbolism. Anti-establishment math prodigy Masaki Suda is caught between opposing naval factions. Melodramatic excess amid rich visuals.

Liteul poleseuteu (Little Forest) (2018) Told with quiet charm, disillusioned Kim Tae-ri abandons city for rural home, suffused with memories of her mother and sparring with old friends. Sedately pace, relearning nature and cooking with seductive visuals resolves with tender emotion.

Jigeum mannareo gabmida (Be With Me) (2018) Smart balance of ethereal and practical, immaculately produced to maximize melodrama and humour, as Son Ye-jin keeps promise to return from the dead to So Ji-sub and son, though she also has to relearn who she is. Highly diverting and affecting,

Namueopneun San (Treeless Mountain) (2008) Created with poetic realism that mirrors simplicity of young protagonists' emotional survival, sisters of 6 and 4 face loneliness after broken mother leaves. Bounced from unprepared aunt to rural grandparents, their bond is acutely moving.

Kateu (Cart) (2014) Persuasive style keeps an eye on both the social and personal as supermarket workers strike and battle to establish a union and respect. Moments lapse into broad histrionics, yet involving performances and rousing politics maintain bittersweet investment.

Parasite (2019) Wicked humour peppers inventive storytelling with a sleight of hand that keeps events at sharp pace and unexpected twists genuine. Satiric politics of poverty and wealth tend to be more violently blunt as street family undermines the class conscious amid glossy visuals.
