The Discoverers (2012) Eccentricities of historical re-enactment provide forced situation for burnt-out Griffin Dunn to reconcile with teenage kids, reserved father Stuart Margolin and own career. Deliberate pace and muted colors mesh with understated humor for amiable, unsurprising journey.

Chemical Hearts (2020) Told with obvious care and sincerity, with an intriguing strand promoting value of poetry, hesitant Austin Abrams is drawn to damaged Lili Reinhart. Adhering to comfortable structure and well enough composed, yet without adding very much and stranding characters as superficial types.

Late Night (2019) Without pretending to redefine genre, smart script details character and builds humor through empathy and situation as jaded talk show pioneer Emma Thompson is revived professionally and personally by Mandy Kaling's hopeful comedy writer. Sometimes roughly hewn, biting modern concerns mesh with broad, rousing emotions.

Till (2022) Tragic soul of true life murder is ignited by transcendent Danielle Deadwyler, as the trial into her son's lynching in 1950s Mississippi becomes turning point for political awakening. Technically precise, narrative tends to go through the motions and rely on melodramatic turns, even as thematic resonance remains.

12 Mighty Orphans (2021) Depression-era legend of conscientious coach Luke Wilson relocating family to take over Texas orphanage team, sees success on sporting field and changed attitudes. Despite convincing cast, familiar story beats and unconvincing staging lacks energy and never allows drama to build.

L'amant (The Lover) (1992) In 1920s Saigon, relationship between willful French teenager Jane March and aristocratic Chinese heir Tony Leung is captured with ravishing visuals and embracing sound. Despite rich production and Jeanne Moreau's narration, emotion never rises above intense, polished surface.

Fair Game (2010) Political drama retains anger and passion for democratic process while stoic Naomi Watts and fiery Sean Penn bring truth to relationship of real life couple caught up in government lies to launch Iraq War. Thriller elements less certain, yet narrative control remains riveting.
