Role Play (2024) Revelation that married Kaley Cuoco is an internationally hired assassin throws David Oyelowo's uneventful family life into violent turmoil. Crisp if uneven pacing isn't aided by tonal shifts that dilute tension and confuse rather than surprise. Amenable leads maintain interest.

The Silent Partner (1978) Nimble thriller with a mean streak as unadventurous bank officer Elliott Gould impulsively takes advantage of sociopathic bank robber Christopher Plummer, resulting in sadistic cat and mouse games. Unfussy style allows for vicious twists even as logic unravels.

Jade (1995) Strong production values and potent cast mean individual scenes intrigue even as convoluted blackmail and murder plot leads nowhere. David Curuso is the investigating DA , with psychologist Linda Fiorentino as prime suspect. Confusing swirl of sex and politics remains flat.

Ryan's Daughter (1970) Gorgeously rendered visuals promote epic romance from intimate tragedy of frustrated dreamer Sarah Miles married to dull teacher Robert Mitchum, but drawn to suffering British officer Christopher Jones in troubled 1916 Ireland. Reserved approach frustrates emotion.

The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957) Gripping, expansive adventure with captured British in Japanese POW camp and honorable British colonel Alec Guinness becoming obsessed with building enemy bridge. Symbolic futility of war adds depth, while fine cast and vibrant visuals provide dynamic storytelling.

Tootsie (1982) Intense, difficult actor Dustin Hoffman has alienated so many he's forced to become Miss Dorothy Michaels and win role on daytime soap. Polished telling and snappy dialogue provides opportunity for plenty of laughs with appealing cast, even if gender politics are soft.

Beyond Mombasa (1956) Unrepentant Cornell Wilde chases murdered brother's African fortune, accompanied by gutsy anthropologist Donna Reed, principled missionary Leo Genn and suspicious hunter Christopher Lee. Pulpy narrative allows for colorful locations and uninspired adventure.

Escape To Burma (1955) Standard jungle melodrama sees gritty Robert Ryan escape to plantation run by independent Barbara Stanwyck, while principled David Farrar hunts him for murder. Atmospheric sets provide suitably heightened backdrop. Action adventure and final twist less engaging.
