Love At First Sight (2023) Within confines of artificially confected London locations and archly conceived supporting characters, unremarkably quirky romance remains accessible through engaging honesty of drifting Haley Lu Richardson. 24-hour relationship with hurt Ben Hardy is tidily enjoyable.

Buffaloed (2019) Carried with commanding energy by fearlessly vulnerable Zoey Deutch, dark comedy of debt collection tends to flounder dramatically even as it drives home social theme with relish. Consistently effective performers and solid production conjure greed and desperation.

Stowaway (2021) Told with restrained style and clean visuals, confines of travel to Mars intensify when unconscious engineer discovered aboard means fourth traveler with only enough oxygen for three. Morality and sacrifice prove more compelling than ratcheting tension as situation inevitably worsens.

Sea Of Love (1989) Gritty, sexy, smartly written and realized New York romantic thriller with as much emphasis on hunt for lonely hearts killer as study of damaged, hungry souls in search of intimacy. Unstable Al Pacino, prickly Ellen Barkin and genial John Goodman add vibrant edge.

The Island (1980) Violent thriller spiked with dark humor sees casual reporter Michael Caine discover disheveled Caribbean community of inbred pirates led by imperious David Warner and assorted British character actors. Captivating Ennio Morricone score highlights atmospheric visuals and eccentrically effective brutality.

La sociedad de la nieve (Society Of The Snow) (2023) True story of survivors from plane crash in the Andes is told with expansive clarity and humanistic purpose, characters pushed to physical and emotional extremes. Impressive visuals don't quite sustain length, though end remains resonant.

Fan chan (My Girl) (2003) Suffused with generous, nostalgic view of 1980s childhood in small Thai town, elegantly unobtrusive visuals allow young cast to shine with broad comedy, eccentricities and closely detailed emotion. Rueful adult memories allow for thematically pleasing end.
