The Madonna's Secret (1946) Low key noirish thriller that tends to shift character perspective too many times before settling on an intense Anne Rutherford searching for her sister's killer. Some visual pleasures and atmospheric oddities pepper an otherwise bland narrative.
A Star Is Born (1976) Indulgent and undisciplined as a narrative, Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson still make a charismatic couple, as the rising talent eclipses the disillusioned star. The concerts and music scene maintain a gritty appeal and the soundtrack is full of hits.
Across The Bridge (1957) Graham Green adaptation is strikingly dark and fatalistic, with a typically mannered Rod Steiger on the run from New York to the Mexican border. The redemptive physical and mental descent is bleakly gripping rather than convincing, a dog his only friend and downfall.
Wind River (2017) A body in the frozen Wyoming wilderness leads wildlife tracker Jeremy Renner and FBI agent Elizabeth Olsen to a reservation where rape and murder reveal layers of exploitation. Finely scripted and realized, an intense western that fizzles rather than ignites.
Run (2020) Efficiently realized with a tensely developed sense of growing tension, a wheelchair teen begins to suspect overly protective mother Sarah Paulson might have dangerous secrets. Emotionally and physically compelling, Kiera Allen draws us into her increasingly desperate plight.
Life After Beth (2014) Narrative and tonal confusion means fitful laughs and leaves a talented cast floundering as Aubrey Plaza rises from the grave and ushers in an apocalypse of the undead. The jagged rhythms undermine involvement, resulting in a flat atmosphere. Missed opportunity.
