Populaire
(2012) Framed as a brightly hued romance set against a stylized 1950s, idealistic Déborah François is the provincial girl dreaming of a new future and tutored by damaged Romain Duris in speed typing competitions. An astute blend of engaging comedy, rousing drama and earned emotion.

Arrêtez-moi (Arrest Me) (2013) Chamber piece enlivened by two commanding performances with anguished Sophie Marceau admitting murder of abusive husband to reluctant night officer Miou-Miou. Initial intensity and thematic provocation gradually diluted by lack of character development.

Submergence (2018) Straining for importance and meaning amid artful romance between assured scientist Alicia Vikander and gritty agent James McAvoy, dramatic tension never takes hold. As they face death, polished visuals and persuasive Fernando Velázquez score provide a seductive sheen.

Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael (1990) Flimsy plot mechanics set in motion by mythical title character's return to small Ohio town, a patchwork of locals work through memories and prejudices. Troubled teen Winona Ryder and forgotten landscaper Jeff Daniels provide heart despite lack of tonal focus.

La maîtresse du président (The President's Mistress) (2009) Swept into romance with manipulative French President, ambitious Cristiana Reali escapes conceited artist husband and is caught in political crosshairs. Engagingly spun, attractive design, appealing central performance.

Thérèse Desqueyroux (2012) Exquisitely framed and designed, infused with stifled emotion, narrative stagnation tends to also subdue empathy. After Audrey Tautou attempts murder, she suffers mental and physical descent, a compelling performance that looks to compensate the unspoken.

Unforgettable (1996) Convoluted, goofy cop thriller sci-fi mashup, packed with enough action and suspense incident without quite building momentum to a cathartic conclusion. Obsessed Ray Liotta chases his wife's murderer, using anxious Linda Fiorentino's serum to enter victims' memories.

Save Me (1993) Crudely hewn characters jump through baffling motivational hoops to provide un-erotic thrills and gunplay. The actual start point for stressed Harry Hamlin's obsessive relationship with damaged Lysette Anthony piques interest. Final reel devolves into nonsense.

Le dernier diamant (The Last Diamond) (2014) Crafted with precision, enjoyably deft heist plot builds tension and provokes surprises. With something to prove, Bérénice Bejo is promoter of titular gem's auction, while devious Yvan Attal the seasoned thief. Appealing leads, polished production.

La fille de Monaco (The Girl From Monaco) (2008) Agreeable comedy drama, as free-spirited Louise Bourgoin bewitches middle-aged lawyer Fabrice Luchini, who comes to rely on initially unwanted bodyguard Roschdy Zem. Breezy visuals energize appealing performances and narrative twists.
