There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) Loose tale of vaudevillian family drifting apart with different ambitions spins a series of Cole Porter songs through extravagant routines and song and dance numbers until reunion with titular song. Winning cast and brightly colored energy.
Terminator 3 Rise Of The Machines (2003) Sturdy action punctuates swiftly paced retread as increasingly human Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to battle latest android Kristanna Loken and aid Nick Stahl's future resistance leader. Fleeting humor more pronounced, stunts, VFX and gunfire loud.
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) From invigorating musical opening, through relentless action and chase set pieces, expertly staged, high gloss B-movie theatrics. Dark hues spice Harrison Ford's attempt to free slave children in Indian mines, driven by propulsive score.
The Big Combo (1955) Compelling crime drama, cop Cornel Wilde's obsessive drive to bring down mob boss Richard Conte expressively realized by taut script and expressive visuals. Sparse, gritty action compensates for meandering storyline. Jazz infused score highlights dark suspense.
Flame In The Streets (1961) Harsh, messy indictment of British racism, as union leader John Mills fights for workplace equality only to face rotten family core when wife Brenda De Banzie is poisonous against daughter Sylvia Syms' relationship with Johnny Sekka. Stagey atmosphere builds to violence.
Dark Power (2013) When mayoral candidates are assassinated, FBI agents Kristanna Loken and Sean Patrick Flanery investigate crime-ridden, corrupt city, a labyrinth of deceit and violence that makes progressively little sense. Not helped by static style, only murmurs of technique survive.
The Ice Road (2021) Chiseled Liam Neeson is part of a team driving trucks on impossibly dangerous titular highway in order to get help to trapped miners. Despite ticking clock and growling vehicles, characters, surprises and suspense kept to a minimum. Occasional bursts of action engage.
Dodookdeul (The Thieves) (2012) Swaggering cast and expansive action sequences dovetail with enjoyable mechanics of executing heists, as bickering gang move from South Korea to plan theft in Hong Kong. Yet tone and pacing feel fractured with constant surprises strained. Immaculate visuals.
Okja (2017) Scattershot satiric savagery coupled with assured visuals and convincing FX provides ultimately uneasy companion, as tone dials from melodrama to shrill comedy to animal rights message. Girl tries to rescue her friend, a genetically modified superpig. Impressive set pieces.
