Airplane! (1980) With disaster plot merely an excuse to bombard screen with unrelenting succession of verbal and physical gags, willing performers accept the absurdities and high percentage of laughs are delivered. Plain style and spirited score accentuate delirious comic momentum.

Balshinjehan (Hard Hit) (2021) Tight, propulsive thriller as negligent father and bank manager Jo Woo-jin finds a bomb strapped to his car on the school run with cold Ji Chang-wook out for revenge. Slick visuals tied to precise narrative beats make for highly entertaining package.

Missing: Sarajin Yeoja (2016) Under pressure from messy divorce and demanding job, Uhm Ji-won's life is sent into a spiral when quiet nanny Kong Hyo-jin abducts her young daughter. Oppressive, blunt drama features strong leads amid sledgehammer social concerns of inequality and abuse.

Daglicht (Daylight) (2013) Solidly told drama of family secrets benefits from clean, persuasive visuals and appealing lead, Angela Schijf, as lawyer who discovers unknown brother in jail might be innocent. Maintains intrigue while delivering modest twists, narrative and characters well defined.

The Exception (2016) Involving, enticing love story masquerading as a thriller, with damaged Jai Courtney sent to guard the exiled Kaiser during German invasion of the Netherlands. Intense Lily James and playful Christopher Plummer compensate for drab hero. Unsurprising, enjoyably straightforward.

Z For Zachariah (2015) Unhurried pace combines with considered landscapes and slow burn performances to create absorbing atmosphere for sexual and moral dynamics to play out. Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Eiifor and Chris Pine are survivors of apocalypse. Drifts away rather than vital.

Skyggen i mit øje (The Bombardment) (2021) Crisply shot and designed, a dark, emotional tragedy rooted in the accidental bombing of Danish school. Technically skilled, strongly performed, dry sequence of events and suffering keeps a distance that tends to prevent greater involvement.

Suite Française (2014) Sturdy cast and production values provide a surface sheen to stuttering storytelling and characters as insecure Michelle Williams finds emotion with conflicted Matthias Schoenaerts during German occupation of rural French town. Engaging moments yet lacks real fire.
