Johnny Frenchman (1945) Friction between English and French fishing communities across the Channel is softened by reality of war and romance between loyal Patricia Roc and athletic Paul Dupuis. Lightly piercing prejudice and nationalism, Francoise Rosay and Tom Walls accentuate genial comedy and attractive locations.

The Mummy (1999) Only fragments of horror origins as search for mythical Egyptian city sends daring Brendan Fraser on fast-paced adventure with librarian Rachel Weisz who becomes romantic infatuation of reanimated high priest. Solid production values feed spirited action comedy.

Enemy At The Gates (2001) During the Battle Of Leningrad, celebrated Russian marksman Jude Law faces off against clinical German sniper Ed Harris, a violent cat and mouse intrigue across a hellish landscape. Impressive scale is gripping, political depth less secure and romantic sub-plot with Rachel Weisz unconvincing.

Gangster Squad (2013) Burnished with seductive hues and gleaming recreations of 1940s Los Angeles, character concerns remain less convincing amid blistering gunplay and violence. Josh Brolin leads unconventional unit intent on bringing down vicious Sean Penn. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone remain peripheral.

Emily The Criminal (2022) Persuasively gritty social background and fascination of grungy fraud provides texture for Aubrey Plaza's fierce evolvement from compromised victim. Confidently told through involving lead even when plot mechanics grind and dynamics stretch character tensions.

Top Gun Maverick (2022) Undeniably effective, adrenaline-pumping aerial action allied to seductive visuals and fluid pacing as confident Tom Cruise leads new recruits on impossible mission against anonymous enemy to secure peace. Immaculate performers in sentimental, fantasy world building without a shred of irony.

Verdens verste menneske (The Worst Person In The World) (2021) Swept up by the humanity and truth of Renate Reinsve's emotionally floundering lead, a smart, involving subversion and celebration of romantic comedy and dramatic conventions. Pierced with intriguing, surprising observation and warmth.
