Mission: Impossible (1996) Elegant, distinctive style lends elongated suspense and action set pieces cool edge, even if twisting narrative relies on too much double-edged talk in between. Accompanied by cracking score and theme, fresh Tom Cruise seeks to clear name after he's framed for killing members of his own team.

Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) Sketchy plot requires intense Tom Cruise to recruit confident thief Thandiwe Newton in order to bring down her ex and rogue agent Dougray Scott. Severely overblown action borders on parody, yet purity of choreography admirably deflects from lack of dramatic tension.

Mission: Impossible III (2006) Out of retirement, gritty Tom Cruise finds operation fast turns personal as unsuspecting wife Michelle Monaghan is kidnapped by snarling Philip Seymour Hoffman. Confusion of jittery action choreographed with anonymous, energetic style on expansive locations enhances thrills.

Mr. Mom (1983) Spirited and consistently amusing, amiable cast sell themes of changing industry and social boundaries in bright package as floundering Michael Keaton is sacked from engineering firm and learns to keep home and kids while intuitive Teri Garr joins advertising agency. Solidly, unadventurously diverting.

A Letter To Three Wives (1949) Unsure Jeanne Crain, ambitious Ann Sothern and jaded Linda Darnell are the titular characters who receive same message that one of their husbands (Jeffrey Lynn, Kirk Douglas, Paul Douglas) has run away with elusive and unseen Celeste Holm. Sublimely structured melodrama, a literate and satirical skewering of class and sexes in the suburbs.

Une nouvelle amie (The New Girlfriend) (2014) Poised in design, playful in emotion, raft of thematic and societal concerns swirl around depressed Anaïs Demoustier's discovery that dead best friend's husband Romain Duris is cross dressing. Shot through with mischievous humor, search for identity and relationships is also acutely personal.

Le Salaire de la Peur (The Wages Of Fear) (2024) Robust production delivers technically composed visuals and performers are ruggedly physical, yet process of transporting volatile explosives across threatening terrain to save desolate village from oil well disaster lacks promised suspense and action. A pale imitation.

Killer Heat (2024) Bleached Grecian settings and appealing cast only compensate so much as jaded private investigator Joseph Gordon-Levitt is hired by conflicted Shailene Woodley to find truth behind brother-in-law Richard Madden's death. Corrupt, noirish core lacks wit and tension to make twists more than moderately intriguing.

See Girl Run (2012) Consumed with sense of regret, effective drama of relationships and lost opportunities sees uneasy Robin Tunney return to coastal home town, questioning marriage to staid Josh Hamilton and what could have been with still pining, high school boyfriend Adam Scott. Minor, uncompromised view on lost souls maintains poignant tone.

Yeogyosuui Eunmilhan Maeryeok (Bewitching Attraction) (2006) Distinctive style weaves bleak mood through lives of desperate college teachers who gravitate to sexual, anxious Moon So-ri even as newcomer Ji Jin-hee threatens to reveal a secret from her past. Sparks of dark humor and compelling lead demand attention despite narrative shifts.
