Blink Twice (2024) Rush of hedonistic excess consumes aspiring nail artist Naomi Ackie when she's spontaneously invited by disgraced billionaire Channing Tatum to party with friends on private island, until paranoid edginess builds to brutal revelations. Thrills and theme of abusive power effectively played, though uneven rhythms diminish bloody revenge.
Deep Waters (1948) Atmospheric visuals capture Maine locations and establish lure and dangers of the sea, as dedicated social worker Jean Peters deals with care for fisherman's orphan Dean Stockwell and strained romance with principled lobsterman Dana Andrews. Low-key drama retains uncomplicated charm.
The Unseen (1945) Suitably shadowy images accentuate innocent governess Gail Russell's unsettling introduction to children of gruff Joel McCrea, who may be wife killer or whose home may be haunted. Despite solid cast, evocative production eventually loses focus and predictable outcome saps tension.
Outbreak (1995) Gripping proposition of viciously contagious virus erupting from Zaire and finding way to small-town America remains glossy entertainment even when character and story spiral beyond own logic. Estranged husband and wife, impulsive army virologist Dustin Hoffman and CDC scientist Rene Russo, battle army cover-up in race against time for cure.
Damsel (2024) Spirited, resolute Millie Bobby Brown finds marriage to a prince is cover for royal family making amends for guilty past by sacrificing her to dragon in mountain caverns. Spare narrative keeps action tight, and David Fleming's score soars, until unpersuasive resolution.
You Hurt My Feelings (2023) Muted, earthy tones establish suitably intimate settings for witty, observant view on personal insecurities and preserving relationships as anxious author Julia Louis-Dreyfus overhears husband and therapist Tobias Menzies' true thoughts on her latest unpublished book. Stellar cast and affecting comedy.
Find Me Falling (2024) Attractive locations and cast, as burnt out rock star Harry Connick Jr. retreats to clifftop Cypriot house, nearby to town where insular doctor Agni Scott lives, long-ago lover and inspiration for his biggest hit. Few surprises, little romance, generally amiable.
Joy (2024) True-life basis of intuitive nurse Thomasin McKenzie, impatient scientist James Norton and reserved surgeon Bill Nighy's efforts to perfect IVF receives suitably straight treatment. Yet despite subdued approach to character, and social, religious and establishment hostility over two decade stretch, resolution proves quite moving.
Fractured (2019) Mostly engaging mystery sees edgy Sam Worthington become increasingly desperate after wife Lily Rabe along with injured daughter disappears from hospital and staff deny they were ever there. Somber approach and final predictability not helped by gloomy visual palette.
La Fille au bracelet (The Girl With A Bracelet) (2019) Told with studied reserve and unfussy visuals, court case of enigmatic Mélissa Guers exposes societal and judicial prejudice when accusations are as much about her character as best friend's murder. Potent performances; no easy resolve.
