Wicked (2024) Balancing playful, energetic comedy with soulful reflection, friendship between rejected Cynthia Envio and adored Ariana Grande plays out with gorgeous songs and score on grandly conceived sets. Clashes of empowerment and authoritarianism add depth despite inflated length.
Since You Went Away (1944) Fashioned with leisurely sense of detail and artfully evocative visuals, rousing portrait of home life during World War II sees Claudette Colbert coping with daughters Jennifer Jones and Shirley Temple as well as crusty lodger Monty Woolley, while husband is lost abroad. Amid love, loss and hope, expansive storytelling overflows with kind humor and heartfelt emotion.
Crash Dive (1943) Strained wartime propaganda sends assured patrol torpedo boat officer Tyrone Power beneath Atlantic waves with submarine commander Dana Andrews, relationship strained by mutual pursuit of schoolteacher Anne Baxter. Prolonged romantic foreplay further undermines tension and action heroics.
The Dead Don't Die (2019) Dry, methodical approach to comedy horror provides moderate engagement as global event of world spinning off axis unleashes a zombie uprising in small town Centerville. Ensemble cast led by Bill Murray and Adam Driver amuses; self-aware approach has very little purpose.
Good Bye Lenin! (2003) Hugely enjoyable and thematically persuasive, fall of Berlin Wall and East German Communism told through family that hides change from mother Katrin Sass after she recovers from coma. Plain style skillfully manages broad comedy, family and romantic drama, as well as social and political edge.
F Marry Kill (2025) Darkish comedy leans heavily on humor of dating app pitfalls as singleton Lucy Hale can't decide on three potential beaus based on titular game. Less successful is threat one might be Swipe Right serial killer and uneven final twists. Abrasive, liberated tone still scores some energetic laughs.
Love Lies Bleeding (2024) Distinctively realized crime melodrama reverberates with noir fatality and knowing humor as defensive Kristen Stewart's attraction to aspiring bodybuilder Katy O'Brian awakens past guilt and present violence. Patchily effective, giddy spirit resolves with surreal touch.
Ballerina (2023) Vigorous revenge action slyly infuses grungy, severe atmosphere with neon-hued visuals as reclusive bodyguard Jeon Jong-seo is propelled on violent crusade after exploitation of friend and hopeful dancer Park Yu-rim. Bruising mood piles up sequences of blistering violence.
Little Shop Of Horrors (1986) Witty blend of bright pastiche and broad satire complemented by enjoyable song score and spirited cast, as resigned Rick Moranis finds fame in Skid Row flower shop with alien plant that has unfortunate appetite for humans. Gradually darker tone enhances humor.
The Hunger Games The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes (2023) Solidly told dystopian thriller focuses on resolute Tom Blyth's drive to restore family's significance while becoming mentor to defiant Rachel Zegler in surviving violent survival tournament. Strong cast and song score, though resolve lacks resonance.
Ford v Ferrari (2019) Hugely enjoyable racing drama balances thrill of fast cars with personal struggles of charismatic designer Matt Damon and combative driver Christian Bale to rival imperious Italians at 1966 Le Mans. Theme of anemic American control bubble under, as cracking soundtrack and warm period detail enhance humor and action.
