Eoneunal (One Day) (2017) For the most part, an astute balance of sentimental drama and supernatural humour as grieving Kim Nam-gil finds he is the only one who sees inquisitive Chun Woo-hee outside of her comatose body. Brightly told, underpinned by social commentary, uneasy ending.

Dangsin, Geogi Isseojullaeyo (Will You Be There?) (2016) Elliptical narrative spins through time as consumed Kim Yoon-seok is given ability to travel back to meet younger self and rescue lost love, Chae Seo-jin. Strong performances maintain involving emotional lilt, conclusion delivers with satisfying feeling.

Warlock The Armageddon (1993) Imagination remains sporadic amid gruesome, uneven FX as sadistically playful Julian Sands is literally reborn and seeks to conjure the Devil. Awkward teen druids stand in his way during a series of numbing set pieces, pacing feverish not gripping.

Illang: The Wolf Brigade (2018) Propulsive opening of dystopian near future and blistering final section attempt to compensate for long, meandering chase after stoic Gang Dong-won and enigmatic Han Hyo-joo. Background geopolitics of Korean reunification and area power struggles quickly forgotten.

Le Voyage de Fanny (Fanny's Journey) (2016) Photographed with sure sense of shade and colour, and featuring persuasively natural and expressive children as Jewish group escaping across occupied France. Yet narrative never quite builds character and emotional rush, dissipating sense of danger.

Witness For The Prosecution (1957) Creaky theatrics enlivened by sharp dialogue, formidable performers and consummate production. Grouchy barrister Charles Laughton represents accused murderer Tyrone Power and is dazzled by deceptive Marlene Dietrich. Well-honed courtroom twists and melodrama.

The Tall Men (1955) Expansive and sentimental storytelling, as pragmatic Clark Gable clashes with ruthless Robert Ryan and ambitious Jane Russell on epic cattle drive. Mounted on impressive scale against expressive landscapes, languid pace promotes an astute mix of action and humor.

White Chamber (2018) Effectively claustrophobic use of sterile set and intimate moments of sadistic torture eventually exhausted by twisting narrative that suggests profundity yet results in undernourished, schematic statements. Scientist Shauna Macdonald ends up becoming part of her own experiment.
