Geostorm (2017) After maverick scientist Gerard Butler pioneers multinational, climate controlling satellites to save world, fanatical patriots seek to destroy countries for own power. Bludgeoning effects match nonsensical story dynamics, initially engaging, ultimately wearying.

Dark Tide (2012) Damp, ponderous thriller has shark expert Halle Berry dealing with emotional and economic scars after crew member's death, until ex-husband Olivier Martinez re-appears with millionaire's desire to experience 'shark alley'. Sleek visuals & fish. Murky action & characters.

Surrender (1987) Struggling artist Sally Field and successful novelist Michael Caine meet when roped naked together by thieves at art gallery. Effortlessly appealing leads make observant romantic comedy breezily enjoyable, until plot contrivances and abrupt character shifts spin story off the rails.

Best Sellers (2021) Effortlessly irascible and reclusive novelist Michael Caine is forced on final book tour by desperate publisher Aubrey Plaza. Road trip clash is ripe for character and thematic journey yet tone and visual storytelling remains fuzzy, sporadic scenes hinting at something more compelling.

The Edge (1997) Rugged B-movie action contrasts with elevated character and nature themes emboldened by feuding Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin crash-landing in brutal Alaskan landscapes to face ferocious Bart The Bear. Muscular, open visuals and propulsive Jerry Goldsmith score.

WiseGirls (2002) Female solidarity faces up to the mob, as struggling Mira Sorvino joins seasoned servers Mariah Carey and Melora Walters at the neighborhood Italian restaurant. Anonymously told with bland visuals, narrative has enough violent turns to keep interest simmering.

Goodfellas (1990) Suffused with dark comic bite and savage bouts of violence, a wild ride through edgy Ray Liotta's life with the New York mob before eventually turning informant. Twisted loyalties and family values told with blistering energy that matches fierce Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
