Moxie (2021) Appealing performers and bright staging sell engaging personal empowerment for initially uncommitted teen Haley Robinson to inspire school with spiky magazine that skewers community prejudice. Generous comedy fuels thematic concern despite fractured, unsurprising structure.

Fair Play (2023) Performed and told with electric clarity, blood smears story bookends as amenable Phoebe Dynevor's promotion over assured boyfriend Alden Ehrenreich in vicious hedge fund company unleashes increasing jealousy and unhinged power players. Cleverly conceived melodrama, with evocative visuals and sound, is enormous fun.

Happiness For Beginners (2023) Hiking adventure on Appalachian Trail for disparate, damaged group of strangers results in clunky exposition and life lessons, with uncomfortable divorcee Ellie Kemper finding younger brother's annoying best friend Luke Grimes also present. Light comedy, minor emotion, colorful visuals.

Love Guaranteed (2020) To keep business afloat, idealistic, unattached lawyer Rachael Leigh Cook is forced to take unattached Damon Wayans Jr's case against dating website after 1,000 failed matches. Easy chemistry of leads maintains involvement despite narrative and character implausibility. Blandly comforting.

Fung bou (Firestorm) (2013) Literal and figurative maelstrom of violent melodrama sees Hong Kong streets blown away by vicious thieves with rule-breaking chief inspector Andy Lau out for revenge as well as dealing with old friend and ex-con Gordon Lam. Propulsive action is well staged; character and story less considered.

Locked In (2023) Elements for twisted melodrama lost in psychological thriller that fails to develop character or situation and elevate tension. Suspicious nurse Anna Friel tries to uncover secrets behind comatose Famke Janssen's relationship with adopted Rose Williams. Adultery and murder told with glossy blandness.

Naeilui Kieok (Recalled) (2021) Left with amnesia after recovering from a serious accident, reticent Seo Ye-ji finds her controlled life with husband Kim Kang-woo fractures when she seems to be able to see the future and unravels the past. Told with style and earned twists, a satisfying mystery.

The Pleasure of His Company (1961) Light comedy carried by charm of the cast, as frivolous Fred Astaire returns from years abroad to charm daughter Debbie Reynolds and ex-wife Lilli Palmer, much to annoyance of respective partners Tab Hunter and Gary Merrill. Attractive sheen of glamour ensures palatable viewing.
