Licence To Kill (1989) Expansive production encompasses grandly scaled design and dynamic stunt sequences in aid of darker revenge story as steely Timothy Dalton's British agent hunts down drug dealer Robert Davi after attack on friend's wedding. Bland staging limits impact while Carey Lowell and Talisa Soto struggle beyond unrealised characters.

The Hunt For Red October (1982) Visually assured and tensely structured, imperious Sean Connery is wily Russian submarine captain looking to defect with studious Alec Baldwin's government analyst the only one who believes him. Robust cast provide suspenseful edge to twisting war games.

Marty Supreme (2025) Ragged sense of storytelling equally invigorating and frustrating as charismatically conceited Timothée Chalamet scrapes together money to follow table tennis dream, conning and abusing people in his wake. Evocative design roots drama even if soundtrack is abrasively distracting.

Lifeboat (1944) Tensely revealed drama lands survivors of Allied ship sunk by German U-boat in hostile Atlantic with suspiciously calm adversary Walter Slezak. Shifting power balance and prejudices inform character tension while fluid staging within enclosed space maintains pace. Potent cast includes spiky Tallulah Bankhead.

The Rock (1996) Pummeling action thrills as disillusioned former marine Ed Harris leads force to take Alcatraz and threatens San Francisco with chemical attack for America's mistreatment of soldiers. Ex-SAS Sean Connery and FBI agent Nicolas Cage improbably break in to prevent disaster. Gleaming production borders on parody.

Carrie (1976) Gripping, skillfully delivered horror indulges compelling technique and benefits from defining cast as repressed teen Sissy Spacek finally snaps under student cruelty and mother Piper Laurie's religious fanaticism. Resulting telekinetic powers provoke violent revenge mayhem and potent scares.

Ocean's Eight (2018) Glossily undemanding rehash sees recently prison released Sandra Bullock seek riches and revenge by teaming up with Cate Blanchett and disparate all female gang to steal necklace from Anne Hathaway's neck. Narrative investment relies on persuasive cast rather than expected twists.
